To avoid interference from various surface noises and improve seismic monitoring capability and resolution, the United States, Japan and the former Soviet Union successively carried out research on borehole seismic observation. At present, borehole seismic stations have been operating continuously in these countries.

Research on borehole seismic observation technology in China began in the early 1970s. Initial efforts focused on instrument development and experimental observation. Currently, China’s borehole seismic observation technology is transitioning from experimental application to practical application. More than 200 borehole seismic stations have been built, mainly distributed around Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai, as well as in Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Liaoning and other provinces.

Borehole seismometers can detect weak seismic waves that fail to be recorded by surface seismic stations, suppress surface noise interference, and greatly enhance the accuracy of source location.

Borehole seismometers developed by our company have been applied in the Capital Region Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Mitigation Project, Shandong Digital Seismic Network Monitoring Project, Western Shandong Borehole Monitoring Project, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Digital Seismic Network Monitoring Project, China Digital Seismic Network Background Field Project and Bangladesh Digital Seismic Observation Network Project. The equipment is also deployed at earthquake administrations in Zhejiang, Fujian, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hebei, Shanghai and other regions.

Our company owns a professional construction team equipped with dedicated borehole operation vehicles. The figure below shows the distribution of borehole seismic stations installed and maintained by our company.
