From September 4 to 8, 2017, a team of 10 faculty and students from the Department of Disaster Prevention Instrumentation, Institute of Disaster Prevention, visited Beijing Geodevice Instrument & Equipment Co., Ltd. for internship and exchange activities. The internship mainly covered the principles, testing and calibration of seismometers and accelerometers. Director Hong from the Department of Disaster Prevention Instrumentation also participated in the exchange.
On the morning of September 4, teachers Yao Zhenjing and Han Zhiming led eight postgraduate students of the department to arrive at Geodevice for a one-week internship exchange. At the opening ceremony, Manager Liu Minghui from the Exploration Department, on behalf of Geodevice, extended a warm welcome to the faculty and students, briefed them on the company overview, and expressed the hope that all participants could gain valuable insights from the internship. On behalf of the faculty and students, Teacher Yao Zhenjing thanked Geodevice for its arrangement.

Afterwards, the visiting group toured the R&D, production and testing departments of the company.

Manager Ye Peng of the Seismometer Department introduced the production and processing of seismometers.

Manager Li Jiang of the Data Acquisition Department presented the production and processing workflow of data acquisition equipment.

Manager Liu Minghui introduced new-type seismographs, geophones as well as product appearance design concepts.
On the morning of September 5, Researcher Wang Hongti delivered systematic training on seismometer testing. The curriculum covered a wide range of topics: measurement of damping and natural period of seismometers, magnitude-frequency characteristics, total harmonic distortion; determination of sensitivity, magnitude-frequency characteristics, transverse suppression ratio and linearity of seismometers / accelerometers using vibration shakers; working status inspection and fault diagnosis for seismometers and borehole seismometers. Special elaboration was provided on temperature drift testing, which drew strong interest from the participants.

On September 7, Researcher Xue Bing, leader of Geodevice, provided training on seismograph principles and led technical discussions. After several days of training, faculty and students showed growing enthusiasm and put forward questions regarding platform noise measurement and topics related to their respective research directions. Teacher Yao Zhenjing commented that she benefited tremendously and hoped to attend more lectures by Researcher Xue in the future. She conveyed sincere gratitude to him on behalf of all participants.

On the morning of September 8, Professor Tong Wanglian, senior expert at Geodevice, conducted internship training covering four themes: 1.Transfer functions (zero-pole parameters) of seismometers and their measurement; 2.Self-noise testing of broadband seismometers and stability characterization; 3.Measurement of Earth’s free oscillation frequencies using broadband seismometers and verification of measurement deviations; 4.Extraction of earth tide information from seismic data and comparison with theoretical earth tides to evaluate long-term operational stability of broadband seismometers. Professor Tong is a senior expert in seismic observation in China, one of the pioneers and long-term practitioners engaged in digital seismic observation, with extensive experience in seismic observation research and testing applications. Faculty and students stated that they felt greatly honored to attend Professor Tong’s lecture and gained abundant knowledge, and expressed their respect to him.
