On July 3, 2017, a group of 24 personnel from the Department of Disaster Prevention Instrumentation, Institute of Disaster Prevention, visited Beijing Geodevice Instrument & Equipment Co., Ltd. for internship.

The interns were freshmen of the Institute of Disaster Prevention. Led by Teacher Han from the department, this was their first visit to Geodevice. After one day of study, the students gained preliminary and perceptual understanding of the whole process of instrument development including design, machining, assembly, commissioning and calibration, and got acquainted with China’s most advanced seismic observation products.

First of all, Manager Zhou Yinxing from the Marketing & Service Department introduced the series of seismic monitoring products manufactured by Geodevice, covering surface seismometers, borehole seismometers, shallow-well observation equipment, ocean-bottom seismometers and strong-motion seismographs, helping the students form a comprehensive overview.

Subsequently, the students visited the instrument design, production and inspection workshops. In particular, they toured the core production departments, namely the Data Acquisition Department and the Seismometer Department, acquiring more intuitive knowledge of core equipment for seismic waveform acquisition and transmission.

The students visited the machining workshop and assembly workshop. They asked technicians detailed questions about component machining and assembly details, and the technical staff responded patiently.

In the Technology Department, Teacher Jin Zidi elaborated on the structure and design concepts of ocean-bottom seismometers. The students raised numerous enthusiastic questions concerning marine seismic monitoring. At the end of the session, Manager Zhou promised to invite Teacher Jin Zidi to deliver lectures at the university focusing on the design and manufacturing of ocean-bottom seismometers.

In the vibration shaker laboratory, Researcher Wang Hongti was conducting seismometer calibration. He gave the students a detailed explanation of the principle and applications of vibration shakers.

The group finally visited the Exploration Department. Manager Liu Minghui introduced instrument assembly procedures as well as low-frequency geophones, the flagship product of the Exploration Department. While learning and asking questions, the students also got hands-on experience by attempting to assemble simple components.

This internship was carried out under the framework of the strategic cooperation agreement between the Institute of Disaster Prevention and the company. As an off-campus internship base for the Department of Disaster Prevention Instrumentation, the company fully fulfilled its responsibilities.
