On June 30, the unveiling ceremony of the Natural Hazard Emergency Technology Research Institute of Gansu Province was held at Gansu Earthquake Administration. Song Liang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and Executive Vice Governor, and Li Peixing, Vice Governor, unveiled the plaque for the institute.
The establishment of the Natural Hazard Emergency Technology Research Institute represents an innovative initiative of Gansu Province to thoroughly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important expositions on disaster prevention, mitigation and relief as well as relevant important instructions on earthquake preparedness and disaster reduction. It aims to give full play to the supporting role of science and technology in developing the emergency management system and advancing disaster prevention, mitigation and relief work. It is also a valuable exploration to integrate existing resources, promote inter-departmental coordination, and raise the scientific level of natural hazard prevention and emergency response capacity. Based on the frequent occurrence of various natural hazards in Gansu, the institute will fully leverage existing research foundations, sci-tech support platforms and talent resources. It will focus on key technological research and technical services covering hazard hidden danger identification, risk survey, monitoring and early warning, emergency rescue, emergency disposal, comprehensive management, investigation and assessment for geological, flood and seismic disasters.
Without establishing new bodies or adding staffing quotas, the institute is jointly initiated by Gansu Provincial Department of Emergency Management, Gansu Earthquake Administration, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Water Resources and Gansu Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration and Development. It relies on three professional research institutions: Lanzhou Institute of Geotechnical Seismology, Geological Environmental Monitoring Institute of Gansu Province and Gansu Provincial Institute of Water Resources Science, which have more than 150 professional and technical personnel in total.
Han Xianming, Deputy Secretary-General of the Provincial Government, persons-in-charge of the Gansu Provincial Department of Emergency Management, Gansu Earthquake Administration, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Water Resources, Gansu Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration and Development, as well as relevant experts attended the unveiling ceremony.
